Catch a Tiger by the Tail

For those of you not into the technical side of things, there is a huge “religious” war between two types of computer platforms…Apple and Microsoft.

For years I used computers running operating systems built by Microsoft. You’d have to have your head in the sand to have not heard of “Windows” and it’s variety of flavors. But a year and a half ago I switched to using an Apple Macintosh which ran Apple’s own operating system, OS X. In my humble opinion, OS X beats Windows on all counts. It’s elegant, stable(er), and fun.

Apple just outdid themselves again.

Today, they will release their newest version of OS X, nicknamed “Tiger”. This new system boast impressive features that all of us in userland can quickly make use of. Spotlight, the new “search your computer better than Google” application seems like a real winner. But what I’ve been most fascinated by is what was improved under the hood. If you are up on techincal mumbo-jumbo then you may want to jaunt over the the Ars Technica article just published today.

There has been a lot of chatter on discussion boards about whether “Tiger” is really a significant upgrade that blows Microsoft Windows even more out of the water. Whether or not you think that it’s user-level upgrades are all that impressive (which seems to be a matter of taste anyway), you can’t argue against the impressive work that was done behind the scenes. This new operating system is incredible! It’s one of the most advanced operating systems out that and whatever it hasn’t yet accomplished it can easily add on in the future thanks to it’s well thought out architecture.
